Press Release
Delivery of the Golden Sunshine to Joe Lind of Brooklyn, New
York
Once again, having been so
satisfied with the construction and deliveries of his two
previous vessels, the Royal Sunshine and the Golden Sunshine,
both built by Yank Marine, Inc. Of Tuckahoe, New Jersey, when
Joe Lind of Brooklyn, New York decided he wanted to build yet
another vessel, there was no doubt as to where he would go! Only
this time, Joe said, he wanted a vessel that was “bigger and
better" than the last two he had built. His two previous designs
had been very open, great for fishing trips, but they had also
been uninsulated, and allowed the sound to echo and travel. Joe
wanted to improve the ride, reduce the noise, and to be able to
carry even larger groups of passengers. He got together once
again with John Yank, President of Yank Marine, Inc., and naval
engineer and architect, Michael LeMole, and he came up with a
new design for a 106-foot catamaran which was completed and
delivered in July 2007.
The new Golden Sunshine is all
aluminum construction, with two enclosed decks, a simply
finished interior, a snack bar on the forward main deck, and is
94' LOD and 106' LOA, having a 31'4" beam and a 4'6"draft, it
will be certified to carry 350 passengers. The main power is
supplied by two Cummins KTA-50s, 1800 hp @ 1900 rpms, with two
John Deere 65 kw generators, and is capable of doing 27.5 knots.
The gear is a ZF 4600, with Kobelt Steering and two ZF wheels.
This vessel carries 3000 gallons of fuel, 450 gallons of fresh
water, and 900 gallons of waste water, and will be operating out
of Sheep’s Head Bay, Brooklyn, New York.
Joe Lind’s first experience in
the charter fishing business began about 25 years ago with a 65'
wooden Dorchester ( built in Dorchester, NJ) which he owned and
operated with his brother Bill. At that time, Joe was employed
full time as the Maintenance Supervisor with the New York/New
Jersey Port Authority. Every minute that he was not working for
the Port Authority he was working to maintain this vessel while
his brother, Bill, was the Captain and ran the charter fishing
trips out of Sheep’s Head Bay.
As the business grew, Joe decided
to move up to a bigger boat and purchased a 100' aluminum vessel
named the Pied Piper (formerly known as the Optimist Shooting
Star of Belmawr). Joe, while still working for the Port
Authority, obtained his Captain’s license and ran the Pied Piper
for night blue fishing trips, while his brother Bill continued
to captain the vessel on day trips.
The charter business continued to
grow and the day finally came when Joe knew he needed an even
larger vessel. One that could carry even more then 149
passengers. He started his search for this new vessel and upon
hearing about boat yard located in South Jersey, he drove to
Tuckahoe, New Jersey, to see a 100-foot aluminum catamaran that
was being built by Yank Marine, Inc. Joe met with John Yank and
naval architect, Michael Lemole, and eventually came up with his
own design for a 300-passenger aluminum vessel. The Royal
Sunshine, a 98'8" mono hull was built by Yank Marine, Inc. and
was delivered in June 2001. The Royal Sunshine made its way from
the quiet waters of the Tuckahoe River to Sheep’s Head Bay in
Brooklyn, New York, where this vessel operated as a fishing
vessel until the morning of September 11, 2001.
As fate would have it, on that
beautiful, clear, September morning, The Royal Sunshine was not
out fishing! As a result, this vessel was called into duty to
assist with the emergency evacuation of Manhattan as the Twin
Towers burned. Joe Lind stated that, with the blessing of the
United States Coast Guard, The Royal Sunshine carried 500
passengers at a time to safety, returning to Manhattan each time
with as many Fireman, Policemen, and Emergency Medical
Technicians as she could carry. With the subway under the World
Trade Center collapsed and the City virtually locked down, there
was no other means of transportation into or out of Manhattan.
Joe, now retired from the Port Authority, was present on the
Royal Sunshine that morning, and before the day was over, he and
his son, Joe, the Captain of the vessel, had successfully
carried nearly 4000 passengers.
According to Joe, The Royal
Sunshine was the one and ONLY charter fishing vessel called into
duty as passenger ferry on September 11th, and he and his son
were not alone in their efforts to help that day. While the
Royal Sunshine was racing to evacuate the general public and to
also transport emergency personnel, other members of the Lind
family were also doing their part. Joe’s son, Danny, a New York
City Fireman, and Joe’s daughter, Patricia, a Port Authority
Policewoman, were also on duty that day. Danny responded to the
emergency along with his Battalion and Patricia was sent to what
is now known as Ground Zero. Thankfully, by the grace of God,
the Lind family members survived this tragedy.
Shortly after 9/11, the Royal
Sunshine was leased by NY Waterways to be used to continue to
ferry passengers from Hoboken, New Jersey to Wall Street. After
a period of time, when the Royal Sunshine was no longer needed
for this duty, the vessel was returned to Joe and it went back
to its intended use as a charter fishing vessel. The Royal
Sunshine operated out of Sheep’s Head Bay for the next several
years before being sold to a casino company located in Newport
Richie, Florida. Joe had been so delighted with his experience
of working with John Yank on the construction of the Royal
Sunshine that he decided to do it again!
In April 2002, Joe began
construction on the Golden Sunshine, at Yank Marine, Inc. Upon
its completion and delivery in December 2003, this vessel, an
85' aluminum mono hull, also operated as a charter fishing
vessel out of Sheep’s Head Bay, Brooklyn, New York. Later on,
Joe would sell the Golden Sunshine to the same casino company in
Florida that had previously purchased the Royal Sunshine from
him.
In July 2007, Joe Lind was both
delighted and satisfied to have completed yet another new vessel
at Yank Marine, Inc., the new Golden Sunshine, a 106' all
aluminum catamaran, that slipped quietly into the Wild & Scenic
Tuckahoe River and has since arrived in Sheep’s Head Bay, New
York.
